Overview
Sentinel strikes us as a powerful command center product for managing large amounts of sensor data. The artificial intelligence (AI) engine stands out as the most advance “correlation” capability we’ve seen so far. This engine creates a 3-D graphical grid from the collected data, then identifies anomalies and patterns. The engine was developed in Australia to analyze data from engines in large power plants and airplanes.
Sentinel is basically an AI engine, a rules engine, and an administrative, browser-based, front end. We wish the product had more control interface with access control and video. We also would like to see more built-in event handling. The product does not use distributed agents, and instead relies on raw system logs and sensor data to be “dumped” or trapped and imported into the correlation engine. As it stands, it is suitable – and probably very desirable – for large distributed organizations with a centralized security command center, processing tremendous amounts of sensor data. But we will watch for future versions that are more feature rich for most day-to-day security operations and which better justify the price.
