Overview
Ortega is rebuilding after a crippling strategic decision to jettison its channel and focus on OEM partners a few years ago. The revival is slow, but seems to be happening. The loss of momentum appears to have allowed this 18 year-old company with a building automation background to be eclipsed by new software upstarts. However, we see Ortega having enough drive and good ideas to maintain a solid place in the market.

We were not inspired by any part of the products, but it was evident that the two related products, FacilitySmart and VideoSmart, adequately combine to present the command center personnel with a unified view of many security systems. Today, Ortega has its sights set on IP video management, making the case that FacilitySmart and VideoSmart may be a good platform for any customer wishing to migrate to IP video soon.

When we reviewed FacilitySmart we noted that it had many of the same features as Intergraph with less complexity. However, the products still require significant integration effort and hands-on configuration.
